It’s that time of year again where everyone is thinking about New Year’s Resolutions.
Whether it’s to eat healthier, exercise more, watch less television, or save money, there is one thing we can all add to our list of New Year’s resolutions. In the United States alone, the total amount of energy we use on lighting each year is 15% and rising. Make it your New Year’s Resolution to save both money and energy on lighting in 2017 by doing these simple tasks.
• Change out standard incandescent lightbulbs with energy efficient LED lightbulbs. Residential LED lightbulbs use almost 75% less energy than standard lightbulbs and they last about 25 times longer. By switching to LED lightbulbs, you can lower your energy bill and help decrease the energy consumption in the U.S. each year.
• Turn off lights when they’re not being used! If you’re in the living room and the light is on in the bedroom, turn it off. Turning off lights when you’re not using them is the easiest and most efficient way to save money on your energy bill. If you have a hard time remembering to turn off lights, consider adding timers where needed. Exterior lighting is a great place to add this light feature. Set your exterior lights on a timer to turn on when it starts to get dark out and turn off in the morning when the sun rises.
• Add dimmer controls to your light features. While you may need lighting in a particular area of your home, you may not need the brightest light imaginable. Adding dimmer controls to your light features will allow you to adjust the fixture to the right amount of light that you need. Not using the maximum amount of light power will help save on energy within your home.
• Keep light fixtures clean. Dusty and dirty lighting fixtures have to work harder to emit the same amount of lighting. Keeping your lights clean and dust-free will allow them to operate at optimal efficiency, so you don’t have to worry about wasting energy on lighting your home.
